Progress Evaluations

Progress Evaluation Update from Professor Lipsey - 4/3/06

-Prof. Lipsey sent out an e-mail to adjuncts inviting them to participate in progress evaluations. Heard back from piano, voice and guitar teachers - in these areas there were a number of adjuncts interested in coming. He hasn't heard back from brass of wind teachers.

-There is a harsher disciplinary policy (education and B.A. students must graduate at a NYSSMA level six)
-entering music majors be at NYSSMA level four
-by the end of their freshman year, students should be at NYSSMA level five
-by junior and senior years they should be at NYSSMA level six or above

-NYSSMA lists are now in the library on reserve for reference

-Numbers in the B.A./M.A. lesson program have increased dramatically (this is a good sign that more students are taking lessons privately, and obtaining some guidance in preparation for their progress evaluations)

-The school will not supply accompanists. There will be a list of pianists and suggested per hour amounts in the music office, hopefully by the end of the week.

-If students want to ask their individual teachers to come to the progress evaluations, they may do that; Prof. Lipsey is willing to arrange schedules so that teachers with limited time are able to hear their students.

-There will be a new letter coming out sometime this week outlining progress evaluation procedures; everyone should be strongly encouraged to read the letter.

2006 Elections

It's time for Student-Faculty elections. There will be three open seats to fill for the upcoming 2006-2007 school year. Right now, we're at the beginning of the nomination week (nominations are from April 3rd to April 10th); go to the Music Office and write your nomination on a sheet of paper and give it to either Ann Dimino or Lisa Lane. The voting will take place during April 24th through April 28th. In order to vote, go to the Music Office, sign your name on the sheet and fill out a ballot given to you. There are three seats open, please vote for three people. The results will be tabulated and announced on May 1st.

For those who win a seat on the committee, you will attend the first meeting in September 2006. You will receive all information before then.

Please, get involved, nominate your fellow students and vote! This is a way to make a difference in our school!

Minutes were accepted

New business:

-Juries: Questions were brought up about policies discussed in the last meeting (should B.A. students (straight, not ed) students give juries if not taking lessons?) everyone should be taking lessons --- juries were used to urge people to take lessons (but unsuccessful?); Prof. John introduced Prof. Lipsey's points about progress evaluations; the question of adjunct teachers at juries, what is the purpose of juries (if different from lesson grades) the question of adjunct teachers at lessons, juries as parts of grades, etc should be brought to the faculty meeting; there should be a grade for juries (esp for performance majors); maybe the handbook needs to be revised (brought up at faculty meeting); the problem with B.A. accompanists (people need to get accompanists ahead of time, all pianists should accompany every year; topic for next meeting: reviewing the piano program); announce the letter regarding the new procedures in large ensembles

-Elections: Voting procedures you sign your name, fill out a ballot and give to the secretaries

-Imani told committee about the new blog/rss feed (acsmstudentfaculty.blogspot.com)

-Keys: Still problems with keys, people holding keys; Lesley suggested work study for keys (earn private lessons by being the working with the keys) should be brought up in the faculty meeting, still talking about the idea of moving the keys to the library

Concert attendance: (will also be new business) Require students to attend at least five concerts, etc; how do we implement this? (bring it up at faculty meeting?)

Student-Faculty Committee Meeting 3/6/2006
members present: Prof. John, Prof. Schober, Prof. Hart, Prof. Bell, Prof. Smaldone, Lesley Zlabinger, Imani Mosley, Vanessa Azzarelli, Gary Padmore, Duane Haynes

old business:
Discussed last meeting minutes

new business:
Checked suggestion box

-Practice rooms: Discussed policies from last meeting, practice room policy was typed up --- How do we enforce #3? Do we enforce it all? How is the classroom situation working (unlocking it for BMus) reworking of the language on the practice room sheet that will be posted in each room (Prof. John will rework)

-Newsletter: Vanessa suggested the idea of a newsletter for student-faculty, Imani suggested expanding it for the entire department; a way to let everyone know what student-faculty is doing, maybe putting it out every month, maybe making a myspace or facebook account or blackboard (maybe too early for blackboard --- do it in in a later semester); make an email account for s/f in order to send out mail to students (tangent: having a meeting to tell everyone about student/faculty, maybe do something this semester, having another large mandatory music major meeting in the fall) sending out an email in the next month regarding s/f notes, practice rooms?

Progress evaluations/juries: Prof. Lipsey will be at the next meeting to discuss his plan for juries, would like to institute nyssma levels as criteria for juries, everyone here should be having lessons? Having masters and upper level bachelor's students to teach lessons, everyone should be able to play on nyssma level 4, etc., tailoring juries to majors, making criteria clear to students and faculty (Prof. Hart will write a form for mm/ba teachers, Prof. Bell will edit it), will make a form that outlines what happens in lessons that gets turned in before lesson grades are turned in, making independent study mandatory? Registering for lessons for a 1/2 credit? ($90) Doing something around school (service-wise) to get scholarship
